NEWS:
On July 27, 2009 twenty-five Upward Bound students and
their instructors from WVU visited Old Hemlock. The students
learned about the lives of George and Kay Evans, and performed community
service at Old Hemlock. These high school students learned how George
and Kay designed their lives at Old Hemlock around music, art, literature
and English Setters. LeJay Graffious, director, stressed to the students
that they are the designers of their future. For the complete story

Dave Samuels wrote an article
about GBE for his weekly column in Morgantown
Dominion Post. He
entitled his column, “Honoring WV’s Greatest Upland Bird Writer.”
Dr. Samuel spent 30 years as a professor of wildlife management at
West Virginia University. Since 1971 he has been the Conservation Editor
of Bowhunter Magazine, where his Know Hunting column still appears. His
activities on behalf of wildlife are diverse: from starting a local
National Audubon Society chapter to initiating the West Virginia
Bowhunter Education Program.

Old Hemlock Foundation Salutes
Ken Alexander’s
Work with English Setters
Ken Alexander officially retired back in October.
For over forty years Ken has been at the forefront of the Ryman Setter
world, working on our breeding program and with our customers and their
setters. Few people, if any, have contributed more to the Ryman Setter
since George Ryman himself. We wish Ken all the best in enjoying more
time afield and with his family, and thank him for his many years and
contributions!
Quoted from the DeCoverly On-Point Newsletter,
January 27, 2010.
(Editor’s Note:
Ken Alexander has been an important friend and mentor to the Old
Hemlock Foundation and Old Hemlock Setter line. Members of the Old Hemlock Family,
also, wish Ken well in his next phase of Life. 1/27/2010)
Roger Brown’s Tribute to Ken
Ken was a valued friend to
George and Kay Evans. They respected his knowledge and desire to produce
better dogs. Ken kept his word to George and Kay to help them any way he
could by helping me when I was looking for an outcross. I found Ken
to be very knowledgeable, honorable and trustworthy. His word was all I
needed. He followed up on anything he promised. He will be missed by all
of us. I hope his work and dedication to English Setters continues at
DeCoverly. As George Evans told me, "Every breeder puts his mark on the dogs, he chooses to
produce." Ken, thanks for the friendship and for all of
your help, and enjoy the retirement!.
Sincerely,
Roger Brown
